Blood, Guts and Success

Ryan hanging out with his brother and sister.
My son Ryan absolutely LOVES football, and constantly talks about it, watches it in season, reads about it and I’m sure dreams about it at night when he tucks his 200+ pound frame into bed.
Going into freshman year in high school, he was finally eligible to play for the high school team, something he regularly obsessed about.
But there’s a big problem with playing for the high school team that stops a lot of kids.
It’s called: Double Sessions.
Basically, they are on the field for 7-8 hours per day for several weeks in August, working as hard as a high school body can work. With temperatures in the 90s.
Running sprints – calisthenics, tackling drills, blocking drills, learning plays, more running, and oh – did I mention the running?
When you are over 200 pounds like Ryan, that running takes a lot of guts.
When he came home from double sessions he was often bloody, always bruised, and completely exhausted. But smiling – because he was doing it.
Double Sessions is what weeds out the men from the boys. It takes guts.
A bunch of kids that wished they could play football in high school quit because of how hard the Double Sessions are. They didn’t want it bad enough.
You’ve REALLY got to want it. No excuses. No shortcuts.
You do the work to get on the team and reach your goal.
It was the toughest thing Ryan ever did – but he made it.
And on the last day, he even got a lot of votes for captain, (although he didn’t get the position).
To say Dad was proud is an understatement. There’s nothing like watching that kind of success…seeing hard work pay off. What a feeling of accomplishment Ryan had!
So why am I telling you this story about my son?
I think it parallels the struggle a lot of folks have when trying to create an online income.
There is a lot to learn with internet marketing. If you are already successful, you know what I mean.
Luckily, we don’t have 200 pound guys trying to drive us into the ground as we learn. We rarely get bruised (except maybe our egos sometimes). But we do have the stresses in our lives.
Sometimes it’s hard to find the time.
Sometimes we have to work at figuring out things. We don’t always have the money we want for the courses or education we need, so we have to sacrifice elsewhere.
It takes work, and damn the promises of easy, carefree-money without any effort. Sure, it might happen to a lucky few, but most of us have to work to learn this stuff.
The payoff, however, is HUGE!
Because when we learn our craft, we have the ability to create the lifestyle we desire. We can provide for ourselves and our families. We can spend time doing what we want. And often, we can do this well enough to replace our full time jobs with a better alternative.
I’m not trying to sell you anything here.
But I am hoping that this story about Ryan and his struggle and ultimate reaching of his goal makes you think a bit about what you might need to do in order to achieve your online goals.
It might not be easy. And a lot of people quit along the way, just like the kids who quit the football team.
It’s easy to make excuses. To blame someone else. To watch TV instead of doing what you need to succeed.
But whether it’s reaching your goal of making the football team, or creating an online income, YOU CAN DO IT if you really want to. Plenty of people who aren’t as smart as you have figured it out.
It may take some double sessions, but the payoff is worth it.
